Fascinating with their calm stillness, yet depopulated cities of Paul Rouphail describe those aspects of human condition related to the space we inhabit, experience and shape. And we, the viewers, are left to decide which part interests us the most. For me, the chaotic structure of the buildings is related to the single human existence, consisting of experiences and thoughts of various importance, born in different periods, having either clear or hidden impact on how we perceive and act. Maybe, perhaps, the most important factors are the things we cannot directly see or even think about, those underlying systems that are too subtle for our crude sensual approach.
On the visual level of those canvases, one of the most striking things is the emptiness of the city. One can immediately feel lonely seeing these scenes - but it doesn’t take too long before we realize that it is not caused by emptiness, but rather is an innate condition. From which we can run away, but never truly escape.
